5 Ways to Beat the Heat this Summer

Summer is around the corner but in the midst of all the excitement it’s important not to overlook the need to beat the heat. Kids themselves may not be conscious of what their bodies are telling them. They may drink less water than needed or wear warmer clothes than required. There are many negative health impacts of excessive hot weather. Dehydration, sunburn, lethargy and heat stroke are just a few such side effects. It’s your job as a parent (or guardian) to ensure the scorching sun’s rays don’t affect your kid negatively.

As everything in life, being proactive is key. Don’t wait for signs of dehydration or heat stroke, take proper measures to ensure your kid stays healthy. Here are five tips for URstore to help you beat the heat this summer:

1. Hydration is key.
The amount water needed to hydrate your kid properly varies based on their age, height and level of activity. Keep a bottle of water handy for your kid in their room, in the car and in their knapsack. Being hydrated throughout the day is key to optimal health. Hydration also acts as an effective treatment for sunburn.

2. Partake in cool activities. Literally.
It can be a shower with some cold water, a quick dip in the bath tub or even splashing one’s face and head with cool water. Don’t forget to wear cool clothes made with cotton so your skin can breathe easily. Go swimming with your kid. Swimming is one of the best sports for kids and in summer it’s even more fun because you don’t have to go to an indoor pool. You can go to any beach and let loose with your kid.

3. Make frozen desserts at home.
Home made ice cream, popsicles and fruit punches are great desserts to make for kids in the heat of summer. You can turn making these desserts as a fun activity by getting your kid involved in making them.

4. Go to parks.
Or any area with with lots of greenery and a large space to play outdoor sports. You can set a time each day to walk to the local park with your kid and play Frisbee or ball. Keep your kid active can have a positive side effect of keeping you moving.

5. Keep the home and your car cool.
Depending on where you live, you might be fine with a fan or have to get an AC for your home. Keep your home well ventilated and clean your fan and/or AC before summer starts. You can also get your car windows tinted to prevent lots of sun from coming in. Never leave your kid or pet in the car unattended, certainly not in the summer.
