Heading out to rake leaves? Keep a few precautions in mind for children
Autumn is here and colourful leaves have fallen from trees and are covering the ground and lawns.
Depending on who you ask, fallen leaves can either be a source of incredible enjoyment or a chore to deal with.
Whichever category you fall into, there are some safety matters to keep in mind.
Be aware that leaves that have been sitting on the ground are a breeding ground for insects, mites, parasites, and some mold spores and bacteria which can create breathing difficulties for anyone with respiratory conditions, allergies, or compromised immune systems.
Children and pets often find piles of leaves irresistible to explore, jump in, and hide under.
For this reason, make sure piles are free of tools, branches, or other hazards hidden beneath.
Raked leaf piles should also never be located near roads or driveways, and drivers should avoid driving through large leaf piles or parking against any curbs that have leaves piled up against them.
