Top Tips on How to be Safe on the Sports Field
As a parent, our kids are constantly on our minds. And rightly so. The list of pressing anxieties and concerns for parents may include school work, food, extra activities, play-dates and of course, right at the top- safety. We worry about stranger danger, crossing the road and, not to mention, water.
But do we ever really take into account how safe they are while playing sport at school? This should be a top priority for all parents who have sporty kids, especially boys, as they tend to ‘play harder’. Sport is such an important part of growing up, but it is essential that kids are safe doing it.
Let’s take a look at how to avoid injury during sport:
- To prevent pulling a muscle, it is essential to warm up properly before starting
- Proper kit is essential, especially for hard contact sport. Protective gear such as helmets and padding must be worn at all times.
- Some sports, like hockey, require mouth guards too. Wear it! It may not look ‘cool’ but could save a couple of teeth.
- Know the rules of the game. If you find yourself running in the opposite direction on a football pitch, you could cause serious injury to yourself and the opposition!
- Ensure you know your part. Be 100% clear on your position. This will prevent going into foreign territory and risking injury.
- Be considerate of others. If you find someone lying on the ground hurt, call for help immediately. Don’t just turn a blind eye.
- If you are feeling unwell, don’t partake. Illness becomes worse when running around.
- Stay hydrated. Drink lots of water throughout the event. Many kids get too into the game and forget. It is essential for your body. Dehydration can be very dangerous.
- If you are playing a summer sport, wear a hat and sunscreen at all times. Prolonged exposure to the sun can lead to all sorts of problems.
- And finally- have fun and be a good sportsman or woman. Shake hands with the opposition at the end of the game and thank all coaches. If you lose, lose graciously.
By enforcing the above rules, parents can be content in knowing that their kids are staying out of harm’s way while enjoying themselves playing sport.
