Top Five New Year’s Resolutions
What maybe even more common that new year’s parties are new year’s resolutions. If we think of ourselves as work-in-progress, then we have potential to improve with each passing year. A new year can be treated as a new chapter in the book of our lives. We can the masters of our fate and etch out each goal into our psyche and through the power of our minds, make those ideas and aspirations materialize into reality.
The key to successfully making new year’s resolutions stick is to be realistic. Can you climb Mount Everest this year? Maybe not. Can you lose twenty pounds? Of course, you can. Be persistent, track your progress and reward yourself at each leg of the journey. And most importantly, remember to add one experience for each material want. That is to say, if you desire a new smart TV, make sure you include a trip to a natural wonder to your resolutions. If you want a new coveted jewellery item, add visiting a museum to your list. Experience nature can be therapeutic and can be an excuse to keep you active.
Without further ado, here are top five new year’s resolutions that people aim for and what you can do to make them stick:
1. Staying fit
A lot of people making weight loss a goal but if you get fit, weight loss is a positive side effect. On the other hand, even just the term weight loss sounds negative. People get caught up in numbers and start unhealthy practices such as crash diet and even develop eating disorders such as a bulimia, etc. Simply put, words matter and the idea of getting fit and the practices involved in accomplishing this goal improves one’s overall quality of life.
2. Living life with more meaning
Can you think of ways to add meaning to your life? Is it in giving back that you find joy? Reading a good book? Writing a journal? Volunteering in the local soup kitchen? If you don’t know, try all these and more to figure out what gives you a kick. Perhaps it’s all of these things or just one simple act that gets your heart pumping. Treat every day as if it were your last, because frankly it could be! I am not intending to be morbid, I am just stating a truth that is perhaps hard to digest.
3. Meeting financial goals
Are you sick of being in debt? You’re definitely not alone. Most people today are in debt which is why it’s become a norm, it’s not looked down upon. But the reality is that you should freak out if you find yourself in the negative. This new year, start building an emergency fund and start saving money for your future. Believe me, you’ll thank yourself!
4. Being there for loved ones
It’s long been said that people wish on their deathbed that they had done more for their loved ones, that they had more often displayed the generosity of spirit. In that moment of truth, no one ever wishes they had gossiped a little more of turned back on their promises. Most people’s circle of influence includes only a handful of people. This year, aim to love more, forgive more, give more, expect less and show kindness to the underprivileged.
5. Learning a new skill
What have you always wanted to learn but never found the time for? Whether learning how to ride a bicycle or a speaking a new language, it’s never too late to add a new dimension to your life. A new hobby can introduce you to people you had never met before. A new language can allow you to travel to a place you hadn’t been before. Keep an open mind and keep learning every day in this new year!
